Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki came to the aid of Milwaukee Bucks Super star Giannis Antetokounmpo after Gilbert Arenas criticized him for not improving his game.
During a press conference held Monday in Milan, Nowitzki — the FIBA EuroBasket Ambassador — said Antetokounmpo has proven that he’s one of the best in the league.
“Unbelievable. When I first saw him, he was this skinny kid,” Nowitzki said. “Just to see the growth over him the last couple of years, he has gotten stronger, his skill level improved and he seems very hungry to still get betterto work hard, to play for his country, work in the summer and come as an even better player the next year.
“So, it has been a wonderful journey for him. Obviously, MVP and champion already. I am really happy for him. He is a good kid. And he keeps working hard and keeps getting better. I am a big fan.”
Arenas recently criticized Antetokounmpo for not improving his three-point shooting or midrange shot and said the Greek Freak still has the same weaknesses from when he first came in the league.
Dirk says Giannis is one of the best players in NBA
When asked about Arenas’ comment, Nowitzki praised the Greek Freak and said he’s a big fan of what Antetokounmpo has done so far in the NBA.
“He is one of the best players in the world and has shown him as a champion and an MVP,” Nowitzki said. “He is the first one to tell you you can always improvebut if you look at what he is done already at such a young age, he is one of the best.”
Arenas, who never won a championship, drew the ire of more than one former NBA player after his comments on Antetokounmpo, who is considered by many to be the best player in the league.
After his comments, Antetokounmpo will likely enter the upcoming NBA season with a chip on his shoulder to put an end to the slander once and for all.
