The San Jose Sharks could be looking to bring the man behind the NHL’s best power play behind their bench.

Multiple sources tell San Jose Hockey Now that the Sharks have interviewed Spencer Carbery to be San Jose’s new head coach.

Carbery, 40, is a first-year Toronto Maple Leafs assistant coach, credited with turning the 16^th-ranked Maple Leafs power play in 2020-21 to the NHL’s best this past season.

Previously, Carbery was Hershey Bears head coach from 2018-21, Providence Bruins assistant coach in 2017-18, and Saginaw Spirit head coach in 2016-17. From 2010 to 2016, Carbery held various jobs for the ECHL’s South Carolina Stingrays, including director of hockey operations, head coach, and assistant coach.

Carbery won AHL Coach of the Year in 2020-21 and ECHL Coach of the Year in 2013-14.

“I don’t know if he will get outside calls this summer or not,” Pierre LeBrun said of Carbery in early June, “but when you talk to people around the league, they say it’s only a matter of time.”

As far as the San Jose Sharks are concerned, it looks like that time is now.

Carbery played professionally for the Central Hockey League’s Tulsa Oilers and the ECHL’s Bakersfield Condors, Stockton Thunder, Fresno Falcons, and Stingrays.

He joins 2022 Calder Cup champion Ryan Warsofsky, Boston Bruins assistant coach Joe Sacco, and ex-New York Rangers head coach David Quinn as reported candidates for Sharks head coach.

New San Jose Sharks GM Mike Grier has indicated that he expects the search for his new head coach to end fairly quickly. Last Thursday, he told San Jose Barracuda announcer Nick Nollenberger during Sharks development camp prospects scrimage, “We have to get through the interviews and coach search, hopefully we can wrap that up in the next week to 10 days.”
